Natural Stone Necklaces: the stones we string by hand
No two stones are cut, banded, or coloured the same — which is why no two LUA necklaces are. Here's a look at the stones we work with, and what gives each one its character.
In short: LUA strings natural stone necklaces by hand in Tauranga — turquoise, agate, druzy, jasper, labradorite, aventurine, tiger's eye, amber, and rose quartz. Because the colour and banding come from the stone itself, every piece is one of a kind. Browse them all in the natural stone collection.
What makes a natural stone necklace one of a kind
A natural stone is a record of how it formed — the veining in turquoise, the bands in agate, the flash in labradorite. No two are the same, so when we string a necklace, the colour and character come from the stone itself, not a pattern we repeat. We work in small numbers and never make the same piece twice; once a piece finds its person, its design retires. That's what "one of a kind" means here — not a marketing line, but a fact of the material.
The stones we work with
Turquoise
A blue-green stone shot through with fine veining — the matrix — that no two pieces share. Its colour runs from sky to deep teal depending on where it formed. We use it in chip strands and as single statement stones, like the Natural Turquoise Chip Stone Necklace.
Agate
A banded chalcedony that forms in soft, translucent layers — honey and amber, smoky grey, or cool blue. Held to the light, the bands glow. Our warmer pieces, like the Golden Sunset Agate Bead Necklace, carry that lit-from-within quality.
Druzy
Less a stone than a surface: a crust of tiny crystals that catches light like frost or sugar. A druzy pendant sparkles as you move without a single faceted gem — the Druzy Pendant & Honey Agate Beads sits that crystalline surface on honey agate.
Jasper
An opaque, earthy stone in brick reds and creams — grounding, matte, quietly warm. Where turquoise sings, jasper settles. We pair red jasper with cream stone and a little pearl in the Red Jasper & Cream Stone Beaded Necklace with Pearl Accents.
Labradorite
A plain grey stone until it moves — then a flash of blue, green, or gold rolls across the surface (jewellers call it labradorescence). It's the quietest stone we use and the most surprising; the Handmade Natural Labradorite Necklace shows it best.
Aventurine
A soft green quartz with a faint internal shimmer from tiny mineral flecks — gentle, spring-like, easy to wear every day. Ours comes strung with a little colour to lift it, as in the Green Aventurine Beaded Necklace with Colorful Art Glass Pendant.
Tiger's eye
A golden-brown stone with silky, shifting bands — chatoyancy, the same effect as a cat's eye. It reads warm and rich against skin, especially in a multi-strand like the Earth Glow Tiger’s Eye Multi-Strand Necklace.
Amber
Not a stone at all, but fossilised tree resin — warm honey-gold and feather-light, which is why an amber piece never weighs on the neck. The Handmade Real Amber & Silver Fish Pendant Necklace uses real amber, with the depth only time gives.
Rose quartz
A soft, milky blush pink — the gentlest colour in the case. It suits a quiet, tonal outfit and layers beautifully; we wear it long and low, like the Layered Rose Quartz Necklace.
A note on care
Natural stone is hard-wearing and asks for little. Put a piece on last — after perfume, lotion, and hairspray — and take it off before water. Wipe the stones with a soft, dry cloth, and store the necklace flat or loosely rolled in its pouch. The longer version lives in our care guide, and every piece's page carries its own care line.
Common questions
- What natural stones does LUA use?
- Turquoise, agate, druzy, jasper, labradorite, aventurine, tiger's eye, amber, and rose quartz — chosen and strung by hand in our Tauranga studio. Each stone is genuine natural material, so its colour and banding are its own.
- Is every natural stone necklace one of a kind?
- Yes. No two stones share the same veining or colour, and we never repeat a design — once a piece finds its person it retires. The one around your neck is genuinely the only one anywhere.
- How do you care for a natural stone necklace?
- Put it on last, after perfume, lotion, and hairspray, and take it off before water. Wipe the stones with a soft, dry cloth, and store the piece flat or loosely rolled in its pouch. Natural stone lasts a lifetime with almost no fuss.
- How are the stones set?
- Each stone is hand-strung and knotted onto cord or thread in our Tauranga studio — no glue and no machine — so the necklace drapes softly, holds its shape, and can be re-knotted if it ever needs it.
